Shooting Black & White with Anna Rojo

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

Lately I’ve had a strong craving for shooting in black and white. For last month’s trip to Hermosillo, Sonora I decided to satisfy that craving and shoot solely in black and white… the photo shoot, candids, everything. I think I started driving my friends crazy with all the black and white photos.

After a most tasty breakfast of fish tacos and orange juice over at my favorite restaurant Taco Fish, we returned to the hotel to meet up with Anna Rojo for the photo shoot. I can’t tell you how awesome it is to be staying within visual range of the shooting location. The first setup was on the staircase, merely five feet outside the hotel room door. Simplicity was the goal for this shoot. The first two photos were lit with a single speedlight, shot through the translucent portion of a circular reflector.

For the next two setups, we headed out to the pool area, a daunting fifty feet away from the first setup. These setups were shot completely with natural light and a bit of assistance from a silver reflector. Check out my Facebook fan page for some behind the scenes photos I posted from this shoot!

A Road Trip to Sedona with Jazmin Riley

Jazmin Riley in Sedona, AZ

I haven’t been shooting very much personal work over the past couple months. Tonight I decided to take a  look through my archives. I came across these photos.

Just shy of one year ago, Jazmin and I decided to take a road trip. We packed up the car with some food and cameras and drove up north. This trip was the first time I attempted to teach Jazmin how to shoot a SLR. Since then, with a little bit of nudging from me, but mostly on her own, she’s become a quite good photographer… and has developed a strong love for my 70-200mm f/2.8L.

Sometimes I get caught up in all the details and forget about the simpler things in life like road trips, picnics, stopping on the side of the road in the middle of no where to take photos, or even just doing absolutely nothing with the one you love. I hope to make more memories like this trip with Jazmin in the not so distant future.

You’ve heard it your whole life. Those cliche little phrases. Like “don’t let life pass you by”… but when was the last time you stopped to smell the roses? …or just stopped to enjoy a quiet afternoon with good company?
