Twenty-three hours until we depart. Hope to see you all there!

Back Lighting Your Subject

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

Somer - Girls of Rocky Point Calendar GirlWhen shooting on location you may find yourself confronted by beautiful, soft, ambient light. Don’t freak out, it’s alright. Actually it’s great, but that doesn’t mean your setup needs to stop there.

When the afternoon light starts to dim, I take the strobe I’ve been using all day to offset the harsh sun and move it behind the model. This also works for photos in the shade, overcast days and early morning shoots. Photos taken in soft light or shade can lose their “pop”. What moving your strobe behind the model does is add a bit of depth to your photo. By adding a bit of rim light or even simulating sunlight, depending on your setup.

Lighting Diagram for Back Lighting Your SubjectI started using this setup late last year, mostly in various shoots in Mexico. You can see more examples of this setup on my Flickr photostream.

We are currently in Mexico shooting the Girls of Rocky Point Calendar. We’re three days into the shoot and so far we’ve shot on sandy beach, cholla bay, al capitán, the lighthouse and spent yesterday afternoon on a yacht. These are a couple shots from the first night in Puerto Penasco. Later this afternoon we’ll be at Chango’s to shoot the calendar cover photo.

Jazmin Riley Company – Hand-Crafted Fashion Jewelry

Cracked Ice Earrings - Designed by Jazmin Riley CompanyEarlier this week Jazmin and I officially launched the web site for her jewelry company, Jazmin Riley Company. Earlier this year, while we were creating her modeling site, Jazmin started discussing the possibility of taking her business online to reach a larger audience. We both agreed that it would be a great move for her and set out to create the site a couple months ago.

My initial thought was that the site wouldn’t be that difficult to create. I had managed many projects just like this one when I was a web development project manager. Though that thought lacked the realization that in those projects I wasn’t the team member doing the actual development portion and I was now developing on a product I hadn’t previously worked with. Even so, the project went pretty smoothly and the site started to take shape.

Time came to photograph the products. I had the lights setup, camera in hand and started shooting a few frames. Jazmin had something in mind, took the camera and ended up shooting all the initial product shots… and they turned out pretty good. It was a running joke for a while that she kicked the resident photographer in the house to the curb and did all her own work.

This weekend Jazmin finished entering the product inventory and flipped the switch. We’re both really happy with the initial site. We have a few upgrades in mind, including a spanish translation for all our friends in Mexico. Watch for that and a few new features in the coming months. For now, go check out the site, and buy something! Many of the pieces are one-of-a-kinds… and the girl needs to fill her shoe-fund!

Jazmin will have a selection of her jewelry line at the Girls of Rocky Point Calendar shoot this weekend in Puerto Penasco! Her jewelry will also be featured in many of the photographs that make it into the calendar. If you’ll be in Puerto Penasco this weekend and see something you like on the site, let her know to avoid the international shipping fees.

Balancing Flash with Afternoon Sunlight

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

Lighting Diagram for Balancing Flash with Afternoon SunlightWhen shooting for the Girls of Rocky Point Calendar, I often find myself on the beach under the bright afternoon sun. The unforgiving shadows and the sheer brightness of the sun itself are a couple of reasons many photographers avoid shooting this time of the day. To add to that, we’re on a beach which offers no shade and sunlight glaring off the water. Not the friendliest of conditions.

You’re on a beautiful beach with a group of models. What to do? On the day we began shooting the sky was clear without a single cloud and the sun was as bright as it gets. Which was perfect. I already had one large, powerful light in my setup and it didn’t require any electricity. For these shots, I set them all up so the sun would act as my hair/rim light. Keeping the sun behind your model also adds to her comfort. She won’t be constantly staring into a bright light, squinting or dealing with watery eyes.

Depending on just how bright the sun is, I may suggest simply using a reflector to illuminate the model with a bit of bounce fill. I like to keep my setups as simplistic as possible. Though in this case, using only a reflector would have resulted in a completely washed out background. I wanted to retain some of the details. I needed something a little more powerful to offset the brightness of the sun. For my main light, I brought down one of my 600w/s monolights from the beach house and attached a beauty dish to it. Being that beaches aren’t teeming with electrical outlets, I also brought down a battery pack to power the strobe.

After metering he sunlight, I set the strobe between 1-2 stops less than the sun. As I mentioned, I wanted to retain some of the details, but also wanted a bright summery feel to the photo. With respect to the background I wanted and the position of the sun, the placement of the strobe changed a bit from setup to setup. However it was always positioned so that the model was directly between it and the sun. This type of positioning allowed for there to be some shaddowing, giving the model’s features depth and keeping them from having an overly flashed look.

All the photos below utilized this type of lighting. For more photos from the Girls of Rocky Point Calendar shoots, check out my Flickr photostream or the Girls of Rocky Point website.

Girls of Rocky Point Packed the House

Monday, March 9th, 2009

Somer - Girls of Rocky Point Calendar GirlNot only was it the start of spring break this weekend in Rocky Point, we also kicked off the second Girls of Rocky Point calendar girl competition to a packed house at Chango’s Bar & Grill.

We took off from Phoenix Friday evening, with a convoy of photographers, models, hip-hop artists and assistants, en route to Puerto Penasco. We arrived just after dark and made a stop for some post road trip brews before heading to our beach front casa.

Bright and early Saturday morning we headed out to the Malecon with the models for a photo shoot and to generate some more attention for the evening’s competition. Everywhere we stopped to shoot people were asking about the calendar and were trying to get the models into their shops by offering them free gigantic shrimp, free “fake” purses, or whatever they happened to be selling. It’s always a good time. Near the end of our shoot, Serious and R-Vel met up with us for some lunch at a restaurant overlooking the Sea of Cortez.

We followed up lunch with an afternoon of shooting on the beach and in the water just outside our casa, right up until sunset. Watch for more photos from the shoots this evening on the Girls of Rocky Point website. I’ll also be posting some on my Flickr photostream as I get them processed.

After our group had some dinner at Chango’s, the venue started to fill, the house band went on stage and we began setting up for the contest. Serious and R-Vel kicked off the event with a few sets, then were joined by Myann Rowland, of MYN Party Online, to co-host the contest and introduce the girls as they took the stage.

You can check out the contest photos over on the Girls of Rocky Point website. There’s another calendar girl contest next week, it’s not too late to sign-up!

Girls of Rocky Point Calendar – Competition Weekend

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

Girls of Rocky Point Calendar PromoOver the past month or so I’ve been working hard on a new project with a handful of friends of mine. This new project has been to create the first annual “Girls of Rocky Point” calendar. In addition to the calendar itself, we have a lot of exciting things going on.

Last weekend marked the first of three competitions at Chango’s Bar and Grill to find our 18 calendar girls. From what I heard from the members of our group that were there (and saw on the live steaming video), it was a great success and we have a lot of interest generated for the upcoming competitions.

Jazmin Riley and I will be in Puerto Penasco this weekend shooting models and we both will be in attendance this weekend for the second competition. With the interest we’ve already generated and spring break starting this week, this event is going to rock the house for sure.

If you’re a beautiful girl and are interested in more information about the contest, check out the FAQ at the Girls of Rocky Point website. If you just want to come see some beautiful women in a fun, friendly environment, join us at Chango’s Saturday night. Remember, if you want to compete, make sure to sumbit your application online, or in person at Chango’s. See you there!
