I also recently tried something similar, also using flash to bring out the model a bit more. Not easy when the sun kept going behind clouds. I also had a similar problem with focus. A friend of mine tried it (yesterday) also had trouble with focus lock. Pleased it wasn't just me. I nice set of pictures, with a style (shooting into the sun) that starting to become the in thing.
